The Muslim Council of Peel Endorses Carolyn Parrish for Mayor of Mississauga

May 16, 2024, Mississauga – The Muslim Council of Peel (MCP) is an umbrella organization dedicated to serving the Muslim community’s needs in public policy and with governments. Muslims in Mississauga comprise over 12% of the city’s population, amounting to more than 120,000 residents. Our Islamic centres, mosques, schools, and non-profit organisations are integral to the city’s vibrant community, growth and prosperity.

MCP is proud to endorse Carolyn Parrish for Mayor of Mississauga. Carolyn has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to public service, advocating tirelessly for those without a voice. Her extensive experience at both the municipal and federal levels makes her uniquely qualified to lead our city with integrity and compassion.

“The interim mayoral election in Mississauga presents a critical opportunity for civic engagement. Given the Muslim community’s concerns regarding public policy issues, both locally and globally, we have evaluated all candidates and their track records on relevant issues. While MCP has previously participated in elections, this marks the first time we are formally endorsing a candidate on behalf of the Muslim community,” says Imam Ibrahim Hindy, board member of MCP.

According to polling by The Canadian Muslim Vote, Muslim residents in Mississauga are concerned about housing, transportation, the support of newcomers in becoming contributing members of the community, the rising rate of Islamophobia and hate, and Palestine.

We believe that Carolyn is the most experienced to tackle these issues and lead the City Council forward.

As a councilor, Carolyn has been a supporter of the Muslim community in Mississauga, whether it be resolving permit issues for places of worship, her vocal stance against Islamophobia, or her active participation in community events and programs.

Carolyn has also championed public safety and mental health. She has advocated for a new mental health police strategy and increased funding for mental health crisis response teams, demonstrating her innovative approach to community safety.

Understanding that global issues have local impacts, Carolyn has been a vocal supporter of Palestinian rights for 13 years as a member of parliament. She championed and passed a Mississauga council motion for a ceasefire in Gaza amidst the ongoing genocide by Israel.

Carolyn’s track record speaks volumes about her dedication to community well-being and justice. Her vision and leadership are what Mississauga needs to continue thriving as a diverse and inclusive city.
