Media Release: March 19, 2022
The Muslim Council of Peel, MCP, commends the heroic acts of the congregants who subdued and held the attacker down for police to arrive.
MCP has been assured that Peel Police has been following up with all mosques and centers in the neighborhood and region of Peel. They also have multiple service areas working on supporting the community and the mosque itself from community policing to road safety as well as ensuring that there will be Police protection present for 24/7 in the neighborhood.
The person has been identified as Mohammad Moiz Omar.
We as the Muslim community at large need to discuss mental health and associated stigmas attached to that whereby families may not access the required supports for their loved ones.
As the investigation unfolds, and until we have the correct information at hand, we should avoid speculations and creating or adding to rumours that divide the community itself.
If you have any information that you think would be relevant to the investigation, please contact the police or crime stoppers.
