Muslim Council of Peel Collaborates with its member organizations and community members to raise over $25,000 for Mayor Bonnie Crombie’s food drive in support of the Mississauga Food Bank. Dawanet, Masjid Al-Farooq, Muslim Neighbour Nexus, Sayeda Khadija Centre, SeekersHub Toronto and National Zakat Foundation all contributed to this grand total. 63,000 meals are now possible according to the Mississauga Food Bank representatives. In addition, thousands of pounds of non-perishable food was collected and support was also pledged by Brampton Islamic Centre.
“Ensuring no one goes hungry -including friend or foe- is our duty. It is an important tradition for Muslims,” stated Dr. Hamid Slimi, the founder of MCP and Imam of Sayeda Khadija Centre where the cheques were presented.
“The 1 Bag challenge has really resonated with the Muslim community in Peel Region. In addition to the joint presentations this afternoon, other MCP organizations have made individual contributions during this campaign. Special thanks goes to community member Shehzad Haq who mobilized businesses and professionals to join this collective effort.” stated Rabia Khedr, Executive Director.
